My Costumes Suck, Travel Foreman's Don't

► Trying to invent a new character's iconography is incredibly difficult. After posting my frustrated attempts to design a costume for my character Thunderlips yesterday, I felt a bit inspired this morning. I decided to take another crack at it, and I think it's still not working. All I want is a look that's unique, iconic, interesting, and minimalistic, while retaining a superhero quality. None of which I'm capable of achieving, apparently. Seriously, I can't work out a way to combine all the seemingly random elements I want to ape (Red Sonja, Thor, He-Man, She-Ra, Power Girl...).

Meh. I'll just have to try again. Still haven't tried designing her magical gladius.

► Just watched the second episode (Day of the Moon) of the new series/season of Doctor Who. Absolutely nothing is going to make any sense until the very last episode in October. Right? Yeah, I thought so...

In his most recent LiveJournal entry, comic book artist Travel Foreman mentioned that awhile back he did a costume redesign of Ms. Marvel (my favourite Marvel heroine and second favourite heroine overall). Since I loved his covers on this and other series, I was curious to see how his redesign was so I did a search on Google and found it here, on a blog called Project: Rooftop. Apparently the design is from 2006 (I have no idea how I've never seen it before) and it might be weird to comment and critique it after so long, but Travel mentioned how badly it went over. Well, I like it.

I have to admit that at first I didn't know what to think, but the more I looked at it the more I found I really like it. The costume mimics her current look, while pushing it further and making it more distinctive by losing the last vestiges of the Captain Marvel influence. I like the new stark white as a contrast to her black outfit, it's more fitting for a character that's supposed to be a bright shining iconic heroine. Also, I love the deceptively simple "M" symbol. It's stuff like that which I have a hard time coming up with. My only caveats are that I don't think the belt is needed and I'm not sure the lacing on the gloves work. Also I'd like it if she had a white version of her domino mask. Those are minor things though, just details. Really, I like the look a lot.

Just wish the scan was bigger so I could print this for my bulletin board. I need to think like this for my own costume designs.

► Existential Star Wars (In French) - Sartre Wars? My head hurts after watching this, and not just from having to pause to read all of the subtitles.
