DVD Hassles

► Why do I keep eating salt and vinegar chips when I know what they do to me? Why, oh why?

Be right back, gotta go to the bathroom. Again...

► Frustrating. Early this afternoon I decided to start my Golden Girls season 7 DVD set, which I had finally bought last week on sale for $10. Watching the first episode, there was a split second where the picture digitally scrambled. I was a tad worried, but figured it might not be serious. Moving on, I watched all of the second episode and there were many more moments when the video would scramble or momentarily jitter. I started worrying that something might be wrong with the disc, so I tried it in my sister's DVD player and it ran fine.

Going over the scenes again in my player I found that sometimes the sequences would be fine, and that the scrambling might occur in different spots. Figuring my player must be the problem, I ran my DVD player cleaner disc through it on a continuous loop. Afterward, I rewatched the entire second episode and there was no problem, but then the scrambling started again when I went to play the 3rd episode. Frustrated, I decided to try playing an older DVD (one I knew has no problems) and it played fine.

Now I don't know what to think. I suppose my DVD player may just be going, or at least getting eccentric. It is 8 years old, and I have needed to loop my player cleaner disc through it often later because audio will suddenly cut out when watching DVDs. When I was out with Dad on Wednesday he suggested I get a new player because of the recent audio problems. I put it off because I stubbornly kept thinking my machine was fine. Talking with Deana tonight, she said she'd take me to Walmart this weekend so I can buy myself a new cheap player (luckily I'm still ahead this month, but that'll quickly erode at this pace). Should be able to get one for around $30 - $60, although I'd worry about the quality. If I get a new machine, I'm going to keep both hooked up just in case.

Hmm... I'll need to get some Y shaped RCA connectors to I can connect both players to my VCR and through that to my TV. I don't have the most advanced set up.

Really, it could just be the Golden Girls DVD itself that's the problem. But if so, I won't be able to get a replacement copy because Walmart doesn't have it anymore and I really wanted to complete the series.

All this is making me sad, and obsessively worried. My DVDs and movies are my main escape. I don't get them not to have them.

Top 50 scariest movies of all time - Actually, the Fly remake is generally accepted to be an allegory for AIDS. Just sayin'.

J.J. Abrams Discusses a Few Non-Trek Projects - Abrams mentions the possibility of Peter Graves appearing in the next Mission: Impossible film. That'd be fantastic and go a long way to make up for their turning his character Jim Phelps into a villain in the first movie (played by Jon Voight). Although I have to admit to being surprised by this since I've been operating under the belief that Graves has been dead these last few years.

Peter Graves! Woo hoo! "Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?" I do, Mister Graves!

Villains Too Charismatic For Their Own Good - Personally, I wouldn't think a Shakespearean actor of McKellen's renown would have a problem playing a comic book based role. But that's just me.

► Does this look like a 23 year old?

Remember, people, drugs and booze are bad. I think I'll watch Mean Girls and cry myself to sleep. Five years, people. Five years. **sniff**
