The first day of Summer vacation

May 20, 2007 17:08

Today is the first day without school or exams of any sort; today is therefore the first day of my summer vacation. Vacation being a relative term. While most adults would say that I'm on 'vacation' I tend to disagree. I will be working just over 40 hours a week, between managing wildlife and freelance cleaning and gardening. I also hope to volunteer some time this summer, since I haven't done much of the sort in over a year. Volunteering always makes you feel good about yourself.
One summer project consists of finishing the Harry Potter series, once and for all, with all the feelings that come with that of 'growing up.' You know your childhood is over when there are no more freak-outs over the next Harry Potter book coming out.
My other chief goals for the summer include having a ship-in-a-bottle building contest with Becky. Carmen is to be our impartial judge, and we will have all summer to work on the ships because Becky is moving to Raleigh, NC for the summer. I've opted to get rid of the cable tv as well, so there's going to have to be something to occupy my time after Harry Potter has been long read.
Also, I have signed up to take beginner's swimming lessons. I know how to swim, but I wanted to take lessons starting over so that I can get in the habit of going by being forced to go. I also wanted to work on my form and my endurance. Right now I think I could swim for about 15 minutes straight at an intense pace, if I had to, but I want that to be somewhat higher. Also I have bad breathing technique in the freestyle and my backstroke leaves something to be desired. Being that I haven't had any swimming instructions since the horrible middle school gym class, I'm a little anxious about my first day. I'm sure everything will go smoothly after that though.
Other than that there isn't too much excitement here for the summer, so your prying gossipy eyes will have to look elsewhere.
