free period today was awesome. we had this huge discussion philosophical discussion of religion, and basically tried to make Ella eat her words. It was great.
But then we moved onto reality, truth and perception.
Which leads me to thinking:
I believe that truth does exist. I guess sort of like the tree falling in the woods kinda thing. If it falls, then yes, it makes a sound. And that is the truth of that event. A tree fell, it made a sound. Even if no-one knows the truth, the truth still exists.
So what is reality? I tried to define it as a unanimous perception e.g. everyone perceives the ground underneath them to be solid (excluding quicksand, mud etc. but you know what i'm saying) and one could say that since it is a common perception, it then becomes reality. But is reality truth? Because if no-one perceives the tree to fall in the woods, then that becomes reality. So reality and truth can then be seen to be two seperate entities, even though those terms are synonymous.
Reality can be said to be things are they are in actuality, or, things as they are in truth.
Truth can be said to be accuracy, or a statement conforming to reality.
So then reality becomes our perception of truth.
Kant seperates realities into 'phenomenon' and 'noumenon' with phenomenon being the world as we experience it, and noumenon being the world as it exists independantly of our experiences. However, humans can only really know phenomenon, and thus it is the world as we experience it that we should concern ourselves with.
Does this make sense? I'm not going to ask if I'm rambling, because I know I am, but do you agree/disagree with me? I have no LJ friends, so no-one will read this, but whatever.
Edit: Okay, so i've come to these conclusions:
Everyone has a personal reality, which becomes their personal truth.
Universal reality does not equate to universal truth.
There is always an absolute truth.
Reality is as we perceive it.
Our senses feed our brain which creates a perception which becomes our reality.
Our personal reality often affects our perception.
Reality and truth are not mutually exclusive.
Perception and reality and inextricably linked.
And I think that's all I have for now on this...
