To the soldier, the civilian

[Zevran has been thinking for some time. He'd already decided his own course, days ago; the question was whether he would invite others to share it. He's come to the conclusion that it can't hurt to ask ( Read more... )

I was wondering what you think of this...opera business.

Opera? That Fritz guy is makin' one, right? [He shrugs. He honestly hadn't put much thought into it.]

Yes. He is going to provoke Lucy Smith with it, which...well, it sounds like an excellent way to get people killed while accomplishing nothing.

Really? Huh. How's he gonna do that with an opera?

By making it insulting. Does it matter? At best, it will accomplish nothing - at worst, it will get everyone involved killed by her.

[He really doesn't know what to make of this.] So how bad is? Ya really think it's gonna piss her off that bad?

I spoke to her personally at the party, my friend. This was before I knew she was anything but a drone, so my intentions were entirely friendly. She gave me a picture of me, being mauled by a dog...and on my way home from the party, it happened.

If she will attack someone who treats her well and means her no harm at all, what do you think she will do about this opera?

Ya have a point. So's anyone tried ta talk Fritzy outta this yet?

I did, actually. I told him exactly what I told you, but...he seems determined.

I was thinking that perhaps those of us who want no part of it could focus on more worthwhile endeavors. But it would mean defying such orders as Fritz has seen fit to give; he canceled the mission Olivier gave me, and it seems he wishes all military action stopped until this opera has been performed. A great deal of wasted time and opportunities to focus on a performance that will, at best, leave us exactly where we had started.

What? Is he serious? Well fine then. Let him have his stupid opera, an' then we'll haveta pick up the slack, I guess.

Exactly so. Then you are agreed we should continue as we have been, and leave this Fritz to his own devices?

Well if he don't wanna do anythin', someone's gotta! I'm sick 'a sittin' around.

As am I. Of course, we will need to make plans...I had my own mission, but you and the others need specific orders, yes?

Though, of course, you and Prussia will be keeping your eyes open at your new jobs...

We haven't gotten any missions yet, but I can handle whatever ya need.

Ah yeah, that. Nothin' has happened with it yet. I'm almost disappointed!

Which is, perhaps, something to consider. This Fritz seems unreliable. We may have to get orders elsewhere...or give orders ourselves. Not an idea I am wild about, to be honest, but if we cannot find some other option...

Give it time, my friend. And enjoy the peace while you can, yes? Things rarely become better when life here gets eventful.
