Movies, Music and List of 10

Aug 20, 2013 20:47

When you watch a movie, whether you notice it or not there is always some sort of music to give you emotional cues.  Whether it's a rousing, heroic theme, or a sole, ominous note left hanging a movie without a score would be as empty as a politicians promise.  So, here is a list of my favorite music moments in films.  I'm only gonna list ten cause I'm kinda lazy...and I'm only gonna focus on movies from the current century cause that's more challenging. In no particular order

1.   http://youtu.be/VD2OBcBCywM Forbidden Friendship by John Powell How to Train Your Dragon.

This music would probably not be as impactful without the action along with it though this is one of the most seamless marriages between the two mediums in recent film.  Plus the whimsical nature and the simple tune enhances and highlights the budding relationship between a boy and his dragon.

2. http://youtu.be/H-BRCMCg0N4?t=37s Carl Goes Up by Michael Giacchino UP

Honestly it was a tie between this and the opening credits where you see the main character Carl, his wife Ellie and thier life together.  Sad, Emotional...made adults cry.  This scene, for me is a little better not only the music but the scene itself.  Beautifully animated and probably one of Pixars best.  The music is wistful, playful and romantic..much like the couple themselves.

3. http://youtu.be/9AvIEr2dxVo Buckbeaks Flight by John Williams Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban.

For those of you unfamiliar with John Williams...then shame on you!  I'm won't go into his legendary status as a film composer but this is by far one of my favs that he has done in 2000s.  This music takes you with Harry with it's descending and ascending notes...and...what can you say...it's awesome.

4. http://youtu.be/-OMbVGuDS_o I'm Lost by Alan Silvestri Lilo and Stitch.

How can you not tear up with this music.  The strings make it sad (like they tend to do) but you've also got some piano thrown in there that gives it a childlike tone...which makes it sadder.  Well done Disney for making childhood movies sad

5. http://youtu.be/Hyw8973Ql30 Frankenstein's Monster by Henry Jackman X-Men First Class

This moment reminds of the shark in Jaws.. you know there's dangers and yet you're not exactly sure where it's going to come from or how it's going to happen.  Obviously this scene plays like Inglorious Basterds and wisely uses Michael Fassbenders fluency in German to it's advantage but not since X2 did we get a sort Hell Yeah moment in an X-men film.  Plus guitars are awesome.

6.  http://youtu.be/DxRKwKJI_uI Star Spangled Man by Alen Menken and David Zippel Captain America

This is a cheat I know...but this makes me smile everytime I hear it. Plus it's got about as much instrumental music as it does lyrical.  Thus it's my one of my favorites.  It's tongue in cheek and just a plain ole ear worm that makes you wish for a simpler time when bad guys where easy to identify.

7.  http://youtu.be/FnYbsAVdkYw?t=1m32s Last March of the Ents by Howard Shore The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.  Nothing creates mood like choral singing...especially singing in a seemingly foreign language.  The low melody of the adult choir and a singular child soloist pushes a ridiculous scene about walking trees into something tragic yet inspiring.

8. http://youtu.be/aSTnmEEotCQ The Thief by Howard Shore Hugo

This scene is not only one of the best opening sequences in recent memory but the music takes you into Hugo's Parisian world with its dangers and wonders.  The music takes a little to much from Ratatouille with it's accordians but still it's memorable and musically beautiful.

9.  http://youtu.be/MpSoU_mhaCw London Calling by Michael Giacchino Star Trek Into Darkness

No clip of the scene...but who doesn't love a sonata?  It's simple.  You can easily figure this out by ear. But that why it's awesome..sometimes simple is better. And this moment in the movie is quiet with almost no dialogue.  With a simple tune and simple action it makes the scene more intense and striking.

10. http://youtu.be/R7m5Int1hAA The Medallion Calls by Klaus Beldt Pirates of the Caribbean

Best intro scene of a main character ever!  Nuff said.

Other moments that are awesome but couldn't make the cut.
