OH GOOD GOD I have other things I want to talk about and more than that I want to SLEEP and instead, just as I was about to shut off my laptop, I discovered that a new TV show will air on ABC tonight and it is called
Of Kings and Prophets and it is exactly about what you think it is and what. WHAT. DID WE KNOW THIS WAS HAPPENING.
Watch the trailer. Watch the trailer, and then let's discuss.
I'll start:
-Naming your show that is about the KINGS books in PROPHETS "Of Kings and Prophets" is like posting an unbeta'd fic and staring at the blank title field on AO3 and being too tired to even bother googling a freaking song lyric and saying "FUCK IT IT'S 3AM I'M POSTING THIS" and titling your SGA fic "Of Spaceships and Stars". WHAT THE HELL KIND OF LAZY-ASS TITLE IS THIS?
-Who is this rando who dares to play my bb David why is he so 1) not a redhead 2) not Chris Hemsworth 3) possibly even a worse fit for my mental image of David than Christopher Egan was on Kings 4) very mcxh like a hobo? :(
-Why do the special effects look like they belong on Hercules: the Legendary Journeys circa 1996?
-I see the set design they're going for is renaissance era Biblical paintings, meaning landscapes drawn by European painters who never set foot in the region themselves
-I actually cannot take the dark gritty brutal sex and violence faux Game of Thrones vibe they're trying to go for here oh god it looks SO bad WHAT IF PEOPLE LIKE IT
-They are doing DAVID/QUEEN AHINOAM WHAT?
-What is up with the terrible trailer music all of this is making me SO sad
-Who is this half-naked lady whose silhouette shows up in the title card? (She is no one. The core of this story is four or five dudes and if I wanted to pretend there was a chance they'd be doing cool things adding more female characters, ending the trailer with an image of a towel-wrapped woman who looks like she belongs in a spa commercial would not help me make my case.
and of course:
-Where the hell is Jonathan in this trailer are you kidding me?
I mean. Man. I had no idea this was coming, and I love this story enough that I feel like I kind of have to watch it, at least the beginning, but it looks like it's going to be such a trainwreck and I'm a little afraid it will actually make me like the original story less /o\
I will say that there are two things that look interesting about the casting: that Jonathan (who exists according to Wikipedia) is played by a Lebanese(-American) actor I do not know, and Sanmel is played by Mohammad Bakri, a previously well-repected Arab-Israeli actor whose local career took a nosedive after a critical documentary he directed about ten years ago about the West Bank. Those casting choices are intriguing enough that I'm excited to see what they'll do with it.
To summarize my extreme trepidation at this show, a quote from its wiki page:
"ABC executive Paul Lee described the pilot episode simply as "muscular"."
God help us all.
