Day 12: I mean as far as diseases go, at least its name's kind of cute

Dec 13, 2014 03:01

So, as I've mentioned, the NHL has been dealing with an outbreak of the mumps. It started in California, transferred to Minnesota, New York, and the latest, New Jersey. I have no idea what the NHL is actually doing in order to prevent the spread of the disease, but its questionable secrecy regarding player injuries is becoming more than ridiculous ( Read more... )

Uh. Yeah that's mumps.

I thought we immunized against that- he seems too old to have been a member of the asinine "my kid isn't getting vaccinated bc he might become autistic" movement.

Yup, it's in the MMR shot, but apparently that wears off after a while, so unless you take a booster shot (in this case - in time), you're still at risk, especially once it's started to spread in your surroundings. One theory is that it originated somewhere (Orange County?) with lower vaccination rates.

It's all such a weird, bizarre mess.

Yes to all of that. I googled after I left the comment bc I had to know. I never realized that MMR wore off! Damn.

Anyone who doesn't vaccinate their children or their pets should be put out on an ice floe and left to fend for themselves. Lord preserve the gene pool.

Yeah... The whole cycle really does work only if people continue to vaccinate kids. I hadn't realized that either.

(Anti-vaccination has spread here too :( In lower volumes than in the US, but it's definitely here, and it's. Unfortunate.)

I knew it stopped working at a certain threshold - herd immunity. I don't think I realized how quickly we could fall below that threshold. In No. Cal. people are actually *dying* of childhood diseases. Seriously, they should take that asshat "scientist" who made up the autism thing and throw him into a volcano with Jenny McArthy.
