It's a new discovery, yes :-) I've been in a Bowie mood ever since queenbitchfest, which was an Adam Lambert ficathon where people wrote fics inspired by Bowie, and I am in debt to winterlive for introducing me to Diamond Dogs via her incredible, epic post-apocalypse fic, Future Legend. I hadn't known the song before reading the fic, and looked up the lyrics later and was basically amazed by how well the lyrics fit, both in spirit and literally.
I know you're not in the fandom so I don't know if you'll read the (whole 50K word) fic, but she talks a bit more about the album and its relation to the fic in this comment, and just. I could read an entire DVD commentary about this fic. And I have since come to love the album.
Bowie is an amazing talent. He pretty much invented Glam Rock and has always been very theatrical. "Rebel Rebel" is perhaps my fav Bowie song of all time, but you should also check out "Space Oddity" which many (including me) consider his masterpiece.
He's also a fine actor and if you've never seen it, you should watch "The Man Who Fell to Earth".
You must rectify this immediately. And find (and read) the Maurice Sendak picture book "Outside Over There" which was the inspiration for the movie and one of the most beautiful books of all time. (I bought a copy not for my kids, but for me.)
