Yuletide recs - 2007

Dec 31, 2007 18:13

Not that it makes that much of a difference now, but I wanted to post my recs before the author reveal.

Okay, so for the past few days I've been gorging on yuletide fics. There are over 2000 this year, and the yuletide good/crap quality ratio is something like 98%/2%, from what I can tell. People on my flist who participated have probably have no need ( Read more... )

yay, your recs are exciting! Going off to read!

I didn't have yueltide in me this year, but I'm enjoying other people's hard work. Did you by chance read the Superbad one? I'm thinking there was only one and it was fagjfdkjhgsh awesome.

Yay! I hope you like them, there really were some awesome fics this year. Especially the kind where it's such a small fandom that I really never did know I'd always wanted to read that scene, until I did.

The Superbad one? Do you refer to the one that scars your childhood memories of a certain childhood series for life? Because if so, I did, and it was simultaneously awesome and traumatic. (And if you were talking about the infamous Care Bear one from a few years ago, it actually has a cameo appearance in the Roger Rabbit fic. Which you should totally go read.)

You know, I've never done an anonymous fic exchange before -- I mean, one in which the stories stayed anonymous for awhile after they're posted; I've done blind exchanges, but the "reveal" was immediate. And, even though I'm eager to talk about my stories after the reveal, I find that I'm really, really liking the anonymity! So many of our reading and reviewing choices are made on the basis of who an author is; it probably shouldn't be that way, but it is, and it's marvelous to know that every review or rec I've gotten is based purely on the merits of the story, and not on how the reviewer or reccer feels about me as a person.

Me too! That's why I wanted to get the recs out before the reveal after all. As a writer, it's incredibly fun to see the responses my fics are getting and knowing that they're based solely on the content. As a reader, I know that if this weren't anonymous, I'd probably start by reading all the stories by people whose names I recognized; it's just the way it is. And now I can't wait for tomorrow today, to see who wrote the stories I loved best, see if I recognize them, check what else they've written (and hopefully, they've all done nice and tidy end-of-the-year round-ups). Anonymity adds a whole new level of anticipation to the entire exchange. It was the same way with remix_redux, and I love it.

a story has to grab my attention right from the start for me to finish it

This is so true! I found I left a lot of comments saying, "Great first paragraph!" and closed the tabs on a bunch of other stories that didn't draw me in at the start.

I didn't leave comments on those I didn't finish, but yeah. There were just too many good ones to linger on those that required effort. I might find myself returning thoughout the year... (and will also remember this for when I write my own fic next year, methinks.)

Oh, I didn't mean I left comments on them if I didn't finish them, but only that I paid a lot of attention to how well a story drew me in, especially after the first 100 stories or so!

Thanks for your rec of "Sun of a New Season," as well as for your lovely comment on that story! They really made me chortle, especially after you were all "oh, we never share yuletide fandoms!" in chat. Bwahahaha. *g*
