music

...So I figured its time for a music post. What I've been listening to, and what you've possibly had to hear me crap on about. The time since I've last posted has been alternatively exciting, nervewracking, frustrating... although mainly jumping between rather hectic and EXTREMELY relaxed =]. The fam's down at the coast for holidays so I've been going bachelor pad, albeit in a rather large pad. Haven't been able to make much music, but I've listened to a lot, and played stickcricket, and watched tv. Entertained friends, seen movies. Y'know, SUMMER!

Well last weekend was pretty quiet on the shows front, but I'm seeing Antony/CocoRosie tomorrow night and CocoRosie the night after. Mid-week super saver specials!

I've been buying and downloading lots of music lately, just one of those exciting times. I was almost overloaded with the older music I've been listening to lately for a day or so; but a quick download spree of 'brutalllll' has helped.

Okay, so I've been listening to heaps and heaps of old country/blues/american primitive/ragtime/whatever you want to call it in the past couple of months in particular. Partially due to a fascination with this early era of record production, and partially on a John Fahey tangent. Its just no bullshit, quite amazing music. Its from a time where there was less commercialism in music, mainly because the infrastructure wasn't so entrenched. And that's not some anti-major label rant, its more a reflection that like it or not, all levels/genres of music are influenced by international considerations far more than regional ones.

These two songs below are by an amazing artist named Dock Boggs. The two MP3s are from Revenant Records' collection Country Blues, a CD consisting of his songs released from 1927-29, plus some alternate takes and a couple of tracks by some peers of his. Its packaged in an amazing 64 page booklet consisting of stories, lyrics, and other lovely things. He also re-recorded these songs in the 60s, what I've heard is still fantastic but I personally prefer this.

Sugar Baby - http://www.revenantrecords.com/mp3s/Sugar_Baby.mp3
Country Blues - http://www.revenantrecords.com/mp3s/Country_Blues.mp3

Below are some links to some of the other MP3 files on the revenant site. Some personal faves, but I've still got much to check out. Pick up what you can, because it all has amazing packaging too. Then maybe they will repress some of the ones I want but are sold out.

Bukka White - Parchman Farm Blues - http://www.revenantrecords.com/mp3s/Parchman_Farm_Blues.mp3
Charley Patton - A Spoonful Blues - http://www.revenantrecords.com/mp3s/A_Spoonful_Blues.mp3
NuGrape Sisters - I_Got_Your_Ice_Cold_NuGrape - http://www.revenantrecords.com/mp3s/I_Got_Your_Ice_Cold_NuGrape.mp3
Harry Smith - Lord In The True Vine http://www.revenantrecords.com/mp3s/Lord_Im_the_True_Vine.mp3

On the other hand, I've been also listening to kinda drone/doom/noise stuff too...

Earth - Raiford (The Felon Wind) - http://www.southernlord.com/newmp3s/1%20Raiford%20(The%20Felon%20Wind).mp3
Boris - Intro - http://www.southernlord.com/newmp3s/4%20_1%20Intro.mp3

On a Boris note, the past two times I've been at Rockinghorse I've either been engaged in or have overheard Boris related conversations. Its almost like a not-so-secret club, quite bitchin'. And to think that when I saw them last year I essentially had no idea who they were (lack of downloadability), but was blown away (although I couldnt afford merch i got a poster and postcards).

As for Earth, I've had a song on my computer for ages, but have only recently began to really dig it. All these bands are the kinda powerhorses of the related genres at this time, but hey gotta start somewhere.

I'm not going to pretend for a single minute that these are new discoveries, in the slightest. Either they've been rediscovered many-a-time, or have recently become flavour of the month again, profile wise. However, they're all things I've recently dug... and I'd very much like to have some more conversations about the Revenant/American Primitive/etc stuff (this includes John Fahey too of course, although imho Fahey's album on Revenant is the weakest of the material I've heard of his) with people. If you like some of these mp3s, I can make you a mix CD of some of the stuff if you like.

Feel free to recommend stuff you like in this thread. for realzzz.

ps - this may not make heaps of sense. its kind of late, and I'm in a slight zombie mode. not mega tired, although I was before. This Dock Boggs CD is a great listen right about now.
