This is funny because it was the topic of a discussion I had with Michelle Chang last night
HOPE
A big issue.
On page 41 Rosencrantz says: "The only thing that makes it (life) bearable is the irrational belief that somebody interesting will come on in a minute".
Totally my point of view. Totally against Michelle's, i guess
My take on this issue is that there is no way to live without hope. The more I think about it, the more I realize that it is the only thing that keeps me alive, in a way. For life to be bearable, we have to be busy and happy. Busy so we can have the less possible time to question about our existence, and happy so we can deal with the time when we are not busy. It sounds confusing, but basically what I mean is that we have enough reasons to be sad, because life sucks (Biggs said it) and that the only thing that keeps us alive and functioning in society is hope. I also understand that it can backfire. When something that we hope for doesn't come true, we feel worse. But automatically we have something else to hope for. Basically, life is about hoping. Hoping that things will be better tomorrow, hoping that tomorrow she'll know that I'm there, hoping that tomorrow I will understand things in a clearer way, hoping that I can get a step closer to happiness. HOPE, HOPE, HOPE. To me, there's no way of living life without some sense of hope.
However, I'm also very pragmatic and, because I know what hurts me and what doesn't, I try not to hope for things that are extremely not likely to happen. But anyway, when it's all said and done I'm still hoping for something else.
What do you guys think???
