Two updates in two days, this is a first for me!
I went to student stores because I wanted to see if there was any way I could get stamps there without going to the post office part, because everyone knows that the post office is closed on saturdays. Of course there wasn't a way and I didn't have time to go up to Franklin St or anything like that because I am going to Walmart in about an hour, which means I can get stamps there and stick the letter in the mailbox but there is no way that it is getting picked up today, oh well tis life sometimes. Anyway after the whole trying to find postage deal I got myself a chicken burrito and I was eating outside and amazed at how eerie Carolina is the first few weeks of the summer when the only people here are college kids taking summer classes and some atheletes. Well during the eating of my burrito I had an interesting encounter, but first I must tell a story.
So after this encounter I thought back to a movie that I saw a long time ago, but I don't know what it was called and what I am about to recount is all I can remember, so if you know what the movie is through this description it would be greatly appreciated. So in this movie a girl who lives with her mother has chickens for some reason, and I know the premise behind the movie is the girl with the chickens falls in love with some guy. So the girl is having guests over one night and her mom is feeding the chickens but she is feeding the chickens cooked chicken. I remember laughing at that scene and thinking the same thing the girl says. She says something to the effect of Ma how could you feed the chickens, chicken? And then I think she says how wrong it is, it is like people eating people I think, you know cannibals.
In my own life I never thought I would experience this predicament, I mean how many people have chickens and feed them chicken? So as I am sitting and eating my chicken burrito all of a sudden this bird who is flying around lands on my table. Luckily, the bird was one of those small brown ones (I think they may be a type of finch but I am not sure)so I was not scared when it landed. Usually, birds do not land on people's tables because they are usually kind of scared of people, but I think these birds may be like the squirrels here, they are not scared of humans anymore because UNC is an environmentally friendly school which means we are really friendly to animals. So now to my predicament.
I was wondering why this bird had just landed on my table and stood there looking at me for a brief period of time, hey I study biology and I haven't taken animal behavior yet so I was kind of curious. So even though this was a little weird I thought it was cool because besides the pigeons that land in the pit and go around for people's food I have never been this close to a bird, and I had tried at home when I was younger...yeah I know I am a nerd. It didn't cross my mind that this bird might want my burrito because it just didn't. But then I remembered I had dropped a piece of chicken earlier. Almost as soon as that memory came to me the bird jumps/flies off the table and walks over to the piece of chicken and eats it! So here is my dilemna, is it wrong for a bird to eat another bird? I mean afterall they are in the same family even though they are not the same type of bird, although buzzard and hawks probably eat dead birds, but they are scavengers. So maybe it is not so wrong, it just seemed odd to see a bird eat another bird. Oh, and the bird came back a second time and looked at me like he was waiting for me to drop something else. Yeah, so maybe only I would put that much time into a little encounter like that, haha oh well that is what makes me me.
