My daughter and I had midnight tickets and both took a day off today, which turned out to be a good idea *yawns hugely*
It's absolutely brilliant as far as I'm concerned and I'm so glad they split it in 2 parts because now they can really take their time building things up. There's still a lot that had to be cut, but one of the things I loved about the book is all that time that Harry, Ron and Hermione spend together, separate from the others. Some things that specifically struck me, in random order:
* I loved how much silence there is in this movie.
* The scary scenes are really fucking scary.
* There was a whole lot of tearing up going on and my daughter said by the end of the movie 'ok, if it's like this now, then I don't know how I'm supposed to make it through part 2'.
* The scene of Harry, Ron e.a. imprisoned at Hogwarts, listening to Hermione's screams is highly distressing.
* I'm amazed they managed to get some light moments in there (and they really work too), because holy hell this one is dark.
* It all looks great, with a perfect mix of wide open spaces, fantastic (and divers) landscapes, close-ups, amazing eye for detail in the medium shots.
* Daniel gets his top off (and sometimes even more) quite a few times and that's not a bad thing. There, I said it.
* Good grief these kids have grown as actors, the chemistry between them is amazing. Even when their friendship is tested to the limit they pull through. The friendship between Hermione and Harry is deep and warm, they're so completely comfortable with each other and they have an incredibly sweet and moving scene together when they go through a particularly rough patch. Hermione and Ron are completely convincing as the two who will end up being a couple. Harry and Ron are such buddies and I love that of the three these two are most inclined to tentatively talk about their feelings.
* The scene that got to me most is when the three visit Luna's dad and it's clear something is very wrong. Ok, I'm tearing up again just thinking about it.
* Did I mention there are some really fucking scary scenes in this movie?
Ok, I think I could go on. I really need to go see it another time. And then again. There are some characters and scenes missing and some characters I'd have loved to see more of, but I wouldn't know which moments to cut to make up the time for it because I also love those moments where they really take their time to flesh out a scene and build atmosphere.
So yeah, I'm a happy fangirl.
