hooray for HP

Jan 05, 2009 23:02

I just bought a new HP all-in-one printer/scanner thing in the sales for a teeny amount of money. Plugged the USB cable into my Ubuntu box and a message popped up immediately saying it was configured and working. Literally, that was the sum total of the installation procedure. No disks, not software required, nothing. It just worked right out the box.

Then plugged it into my Vista machine and it took about an hour of dicking around to get it working correctly there.

So, what was that again about Linux only being for geeks?

(Admittedly, this is because HP's Linux support is tremendous. With some other company's printers this may not have been as painless. Still, goes to show that if something doesn't work in Linux, it's usually not Linux's fault, it's shitty support from the manufacturer.)
