Summary: Eva’s dad gives her a revelation on his deathbed.

Eva’s dad was in hospital. John’d driven her over here - the least he could do, he figured, after boring her senseless with all his flirting with the doctor - so she could spend some time with her dad.
As for John, he just waited by the door, keeping guard - not that a guard was needed, but it let him feel useful and helping.
“What?” he overheard Eva ask her dad. “Say that again?”
After a while, Eva said, “Rest up. You’re gonna get better,” and came over to stand by Amsterdam. “You would not believe what he just told me.”
“Something unbelievable, would be my guess,” John said.
“Oh, funny. He said I’m sort of adopted; that ten years ago, I got a form of amnesia, so he raised me as his own, and let me go through police training.”
“Your dad always did strike me as the beneficent sort.”
“I’ll tell him you said that. And,” Eva told him, a wicked grin on her face now, “appearantly I’m older than you.”
“Really?” perfectly willing to humor her.
“You’re four hundred, right?”
Thereabouts. “That’s right.”
“Well, according to my dad, I’m five hundred and twelve years, four months, nine days, and seven hours old.”
“You’re right - you win, Eva.”
“And my name’s Susan. Susan Foreman.”
