A smile on her face, Dani approached Crews -
Who promptly took a step back. Away.
“What’re you doing?” she asked him. Smile gone.
“Backing away.”
If that’s zen, it’s zen that doesn’t sound like zen - though that might be zen. “Why?”
“You’re wearing heels,” Crews said.
Dani blinked. “Yeah.” Not wearing perfume though, not even for you. “So?”
“Heels hurt.”
Prison?
Before she could ask, “Jen used to accidentally step on my feet when I was wearing shoes.” And thicker ones than I’ve on now.
Ah. “I’ll slip them off,” Dani offered. “We’re supposed to be married. You know, hug when the nosy neighbors are watching through the windows.”
“We could get curtains.”
“Mr. No Furniture wants curtains?”
“We’re on a case.”
“I just said that.”
“I know.”
“And?”
“You’re right.”
Damn straight.
“So,” Charlie said.
“So?”
“Hug?”
Dani said something under her breath.
Mandarin, Charlie knew.
Slowly and tentatively inside, Dani and Charlie hugged, coming together with no outward hesitation or reluctance. He whispered something in her hair, right to her ear.
She had his face and chest flat against the tabletop in no time flat, holding one of his hands behind him. “Don’t. You. Ever. Say. That,” Dani said, her voice ice.
O-kay…no drive-in movie.
