Summary: What a fylfot is, and a laurel branch is offered.

“That’s a swastika.” Alan’s the first to regain his voice. “They’re all swastikas.” Fylfots.

“Of course,” my dad replies.

“They’re good luck,” I tell Charlie, who looks at me like I’ve told him ‘2+2=5’. “It’s not the same symbol the Germans used.”

“Why would your friends here think…? Ah. I say, you could have mentioned it on your prior visit, Mr. Eppes.”

“I didn’t think it needed to be said,” Alan says.

“Then I’d suggest calling the caterer, and cancel the steak dinner for the reception.”

“I’ll do that,” and Alan and Charlie relax. That’s my dad, always able to tip the scales back to a balanced state…I think that that’s where I get my mathematical ability from.
