The other other J.Watson
.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.

"How was the doctor's?" Bell asked when Sherlock finally arrived at the precinct.

"Living testiment to the claim that 'hurry up and wait' is a near-universal feature of all human civilization," Sherlock said.

Bell nodded. "Sadly true. By the way, you should head over to the Captain's office - he's talking with Dr. Watson right now, so..."

Sherlock nodded. "Understood," and walked over to said office. As he approached, he noticed Captain Gregson holding a conversation with Dr. Watson... and Sherlock's mind wouldn't let it rest at that - finding little irregularities in the scene.

Coming to the office's door, Sherlock poked his head inside and asked, "Captain, may I have a word?"

"Sure. If you'll -" Captain Gregson started to say to the woman Sherlock was certain was not his sober companion.

"Terribly sorry, but I meant with her. Shouldn't be long," Sherlock assured him.

Gregson nodded, and gave them the room, closing the door behind him.

"You," Sherlock said to not-Joan, "are defininitively not Dr. Joan Watson, retired."

"You sound sure of that," the woman said.

"If you know anything of me, then you know I am emphatically certain."

"Then bravo." Standing up, she said, "Given I and Joan sit identically, how did you discern so swiftly?"

"I might have been deceived, had you worn your wedding ring," Sherlock said. "Watson may have donned one, but she hasn't had the time to build up the distinctive features I note of your left hand's ring finger."

"Then congrats, Mr. Holmes, that places you in rarefied company. Few people can distinguish between Joan and myself without more obvious cues."

"Overwhelmingly, people tend to be most oblivious to the obvious," he agreed.

"Case in point."

"Yes?"

"De nada."

"You are not Joan Watson," Sherlock said. "Which leaves the inevitable question of who are you?"

"Her sister. Dr. Janice Watson. And you can only be Sherlock Holmes."

"She's mentioned me?"

"In a manner of speaking." As have my in-laws.

"And yet she has never mentioned you."

"Unsurprising," Janice said, "given your braggado regarding deducing facts about our family."

Touché, Holmes granted. "Now, I presume you are here to assist with the case - that would be why you were speaking to Captain Gregson, which suggests you are more qualified in an investigative role than your sister - which begs the question of if you would prefer I address you by your given name, or follow the ruse by calling you Joan."

"How do you address my sister?" Janice asked him.

"Very well. Come, Watson," and headed for the door.

Oh, I like this! Your Sherlock voice is spot on and I like Janice. Great job with the deductions, too. Thanks so much for writing it!
