"Reassuring, but not the reason I'm not lying down," Colby said to Nikki, who was sitting on the only bed in the otherwise empty-ish cement block of a room.

"Can't be because we wouldn't notice the door opening or anything else happening - we're both light sleepers," Nikki said. "Can't be from - Wait, is that it?"

"Huh?"

"Don't huh me. Are you afraid Ian's going to hunt you down and kill you slowly if you and I are that close while we're being held captive?"

Colby didn't say anything.

"I know Ian, and he's not going to hurt you, Colby. Callie won't either, I'll testify on your behalf if she goes against character and doubts your integrity."

"Oh I know Callie'll understand, and I'm not worried about Edgerton."

Nikki snorted.

"Bù," Colby said: No. "Though now I've got an idea of the sort of soap operas you and Edgerton watch when you're alone."

"Me and Alice, actually; and what would you have expected - we were teenagers."

"Can't picture you as a teenager."

"I was the straight-laced one."

"Uh-huh," not about to picture Alice Chen as a wild child.

"Fine. Then why? What possible reason could you have for not coming over here and getting off your feet?"
