Michael didn't make it in time - the explosion ripped the gate down and struck him.
Properly summoned, fire can bring a man to his knees as quickly as it did his Paleolithic ancestors. Flames can rob him of breath, make him speechless, paralyze every muscle in his body so no matter how much he wants to rush the inferno, he cannot. It also summons memories in those who behold it.
Michael has seen many things burn. People too.
But this explosion hits him in a way he has not hurt since his wife and child were taken from him. Two explosions. He can't even label them bookends in his orderly mind, because he knows his life is far from over... and there will always be things going boom around him.
As he rises slowly to his feet, he sees Nikita...
