Steve's dad used to work for Wo Fat, until one day he decided to retire and focus on just cop business and his family. and that was fine...
...up until the day that McGarrett Sr. decided to turn on Wo Fat. betrayed, Wo Fat or one of his subordinates gave the order for him to be killed. (sadly, Steve's mom was the one driving the car that day)
and that's what Wo Fat meant when he told Steve to be careful when digging, because he (Steve) may not like what he (Steve) finds.
ps: did they ever give a name to Steve's mom?
