Dresden Files drabble: "wishes and ponies"

I was going through my notebooks when I found this.
this would have been a part of Three Times Happy but for the fact that, when I finished writing this drabble, it didn't feel too happy to me.

The day's going well for me so far. I fixed Murph and Anna lunch - managed to avoid burning the toast - and now we're sitting down for a nice, quiet game of Go Fish.
"Mr. Dresden," Anna asks, after asking her mom for 5s, "if you had three wishes, what would you ask for?"
I freeze - and by freeze, I mean I don't move, nothing temperature related. Mr. Dresden, that's me. Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. But that's not why I froze.
Oh no, it was the question. "I'm happy right now," I say. And, as it's my turn, "Do you have any 8s, Anna?" In my line of work, wishes are more problem than solution. And Anna Murphy has no 8s.
"But if you had to," she pressed. If her or her mother knew about how real wishes and magic are, she wouldn't ask. They're both too smart to be tempted.
"Well, I suppose I'm too old for a pony," I say. Anna, all of nine years old, giggles.
Come to think of it, I never wanted a pony. For most of my life, I had Bob following me around. Don't get me wrong, I had a stuffed dragon - plush - but my mom threw it out when I turned four.
