Oct 16, 2007 18:36

Title: That Dance
Fandom: Firefly
Central characters: Mal, Kaylee
Summary: Witness a dance where Mal’s clueless and Kaylee’s horrified

Spoilers: Very very vague ones for ‘Mrs Reynolds’

There is an Author’s Note at the end of the story.
WARNING: I am ignoring the Kaylee/Tam ship…or it just takes place before the start of the series.

MAL’S POV:

That girl’s a vex alright.

Can’t figure out why it is Kaylee’s blushing.

Here we are sittin’ ‘round a bonfire’s last dim embers, our hosts graciously dancing for us now that all the business is said and done with, and by us I do mean myself, Kaylee, Wash, and Zoe; and Kaylee’s blushing like she’s never seen men dance before. I’d be surprised if that’s the case: we’re here trading with friends of her Lee Family.

Jayne would hate this dance; no thrusting, nothing sexual on show, not even body contact between dancers. And why is it everytime they look at me, Kaylee’s blush stretches further down her neck?

Inara’d most probably be amused, entertained by local custom here.

The dance’s winding to a close now, and one guy comes up to me with something in his hand - oh no, not again - but before he can hand what’s in his fist to me, Kaylee shoots to her feet and hollers “You have no right to do that!”

Everyone’s looking at us. “Tactical retreat, sir?” Zoe asks me.

KAYLEE’S POV:

E shén Shàngdì !

They’re showcasing me in this dance - everything from my being fostered out to my family’s oldest friends the Huih Family, to my being courted by Dominic Park Huih, to me sleeping with him - in dance, all soft glides and long caresses to the air - to me giving him three courtstones as Promissory, to signal my Intent and impending vow.

They don’t show Dominic dying from flue. They don’t show me running away. They couldn’t show when and how I first met Mal.

And then, as if all that’s not enough, Gregory Huih Huih comes right up to Malcolm, fully intent on giving him Dominic’s courtstones.

I know, I know he’s just legitimizing my relationship with Mal, and the Huih approve... but before I know it, I’m up and shouting Gregory off. I wanted to court Mal myself in my own way, giving him the courtstones when we were both ready for them.

The End

Author’s Note: E is not Chinese; it is derived from the Semitic El meaning God. Shàngdì also translates to God, as does shén.
