Though that ties into this: Dr Caine, if you think that the aliens built the planet for you, why did they make the winters so harsh?
New Englander here - those winters don't sound too harsh :-); and they can probably move south. My beef with Caine is his hubris - the planet's built, but built for THEM?
he look on Rush's face when Col. Young said that if they'd met the aliens, Rush "would finally have someone to talk to."
I agree with wneleh--unless that planet had the same climate/season all over, they could move south until. I don't remember Caine being quite so...full of faith before. I understand why they thought the planet was built for them, but I'd be asking the question of WHY, not WHO. All Powerful geniesAliens don't go around creating planets for lost humans out of the kindness of their (metaphorical or otherwise) hearts.
And seriously, has no one else watched any scifi on that ship but Eli? A little caution is a good thing. Shoulder it. Live it. Love it when you're in hostile territories.

Best I can come up with is, they're the only people in *their* universe right now, so that make them the only people in *the* universe, at some level.

Eli is one of the few people who's pretty happy to be there - as opposed to his mom's basement. Missing mom, of course, but otherwise he's content, or at least not desperate.

I wonder if Rush really was baffled??

him and Dr Park.
Lt James and Dr Rush seem like they'd enjoy being out there more, if they didn't have to deal with people.
