Ah, but part of the Highland-Lowland divide in Scotland is due to the language barrier. The Lowland Scots complained about the Highlanders speaking Erse, i.e. Irish.

I knew about the Scots-Irish in Ireland (and some moved from there to the Colonies)...but not about that aspect of the Highland/Lowland divide.
