are the transformers creations of SkyNet? (a last-ditch weapon when mankind is winning?)
or are the transformers the product of another machine mind, for use against SkyNet?

not sure if the Allspark is to the Transformers what the Progenitors are to the beings in the Up-Lift Universe (created by David Brin, expanded by GURPS)
though, given how the UpLift Universe recognizes a Machine Civilization...maybe a crossover wouldn't be too difficult?
