Dollhouse #7

Adelle DeWitt was alone in her office, watching Paul comforting a robe-wrapped Mellie in her apartment as the police took her statement about the attacker. Adelle listened as the gist of the report held to what was underwritten in Mellie's subconcious, which was fleshed out by the barely-reigned-in hysteria. Fear, Adelle knew. Quite real.

So long as Paul was searching for the Dollhouse, so long as he was alienating informants and the FBI alike, he was alone. And as long as he was alone and searching, there would not be anyone else tasked to find the Dollhouse. Not in this country, anyway.

And really, that was the only reason Adelle hadn't had Paul killed. Their shared past didn't factor into it at all.

Besides, there were assignments now.

Mellie.

Like Dominic, she was a graduate of the Dollhouse.

Adelle smiled at the knowledge of Dominic's displeasure - and helplessness - at knowing that he, like Mellie, had access phrases embedded in his mind. No palace coups on my watch.

She considered stopping by the apartment, saying hello. It was ironic, how hard he was looking, yet he'd never even considered... She knew every sweaty inch of Paul, just as she knew every clinical inch of Mellie. Mellie had been placed there to protect Paul, to keep assassins from his door.

To keep the other Dollhouses at bay. We all play from the same book, as Topher may say, but we reach disagreements about the minutia of our duty here. Not all the heads of Dollhouses would be as tolerant as Adelle.

It all depended on things continuing well (disappointments like Herne aside), with nobody being assigned to accompany Paul on his quest for the Dollhouse. The lack of investigation was was the ace she played as often as needed to keep calm the one who held all the strings over every Dollhouse.

She didn't want Paul to meet the one who could, with a whisper, change her utterly.
