Title: Does the bloodline end?
Character: Abner, Jonathan
Word Count: 212
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Abner corners the prince and lays it all out.

Author’s Note: Written for me. I seriously didn’t like what the final princely scene suggested about Jonathan (“Jack”).
Disclaimer: I don’t own Kings or anything related to it.

Abner waited; he was good at that, so he did. When an opportune moment arose, he shoved the prince against a pricey wood - mahogany - wall, even knowing the penalty for unprovoked assault on any member of the Royal Family…a punishment all the worse when committed against the Heir Appearant.

With Abner’s forearm at his throat, Jonathan couldn’t do more than crack out a brief question, indignation and terror heavy in his voice - he knew what Abner was capable of, and he’d heard some things that Abner might be capable of. Did my father send you to finish me off?

“Your father is King,” Abner said. “The anointed one. You’re his son.”

“Mm-hm,” Jonathan agreed.

“You are legitimate. You will succeed your father because of your blood. Now answer me this: who’s going to succeed you?”

“Huh?” he asked, having been expecting pretty much any argument *except* for that one.
Abner let go. “Unless you’re planning on announcing that you won’t stand to inherit the Kingdom, you’re going to have to think it over.”

“I could say my sister deserves the throne more than I do,” Jonathan said, voicing one possibility.

“Always possible,” Abner said, and walked away, leaving the Crown Prince to decide if that truly was the path he would take.
