“Remind me again,” Sophie said, trying to remember how to crawl through an air duct. There’s a reason I chose to let myself get out of practice with this approach.
“It’s my turn being the snooty-sounding one,” Parker said through the comms, enjoying being the fancy-dressed one.
“She has a point there,” Nate said. “And remember, you said when you signed on, that you’d let others take the lead.”
“I said we’d share roles in accordance with our abilities,” Sophie said.
“Sophie’s a Marxist?” Parker asked.
Several male laughs only stopped when Sophie made a threatening remark.
“Besides,” Parker said, “we needed someone who would get rescued by Security after getting stuck in the ventilation system.”
Sophie stopped moving, by choice. “What?”
“You didn’t tell her?” Parker asked Nate.
“I figured that was more your balliwick,” Nate said.
“I’m not -”
“Before you say ‘English,’” Sophie said, “consider that we could have found someone else to fit that role.”
“Like who?”
“I don’t know…Eliot, perhaps?”
“What??” Eliot asked.
