“No!” Annie said. “No,” with firm refusal that echoed through the house and rumbled through the room, and she raced over to George and Mitchell. Her feet weren’t stomping or anything, but each footfall was thunderous.

“The door -” George squeaked as it blinked away, leaving an after-image of a stone angel in its place that too was gone in a flash. And that gave him an idea, reminded him of something Nina’d given him: a flask that he raced to the kitchen to fetch. Uncorking it, George poured, “Drink this. Drink it, Mitchell.”

Obedient for once, the vampire drank…there was always a chance…

The recipe’s a family heirloom, Nina had said; my mum wouldn’t let me move out until I proved I could prepare it myself. Cures everything, Nina had said. Everything but what I’ve got.

As he sat there on the stairs with Annie, watching with morbid fascination - and was it ‘morbid’ per se when the subject was already dead? - as the blood flowed up off the floor and back into Mitchell.

“Ow,” Mitchell said, his voice indicating more of surprise and pleased-to-be-annoyed, not more great pain like before. And the bad blood, the stuff that had flowed out of Mitchell, now flowed out through his chest wound, hauling the stake with it.

Once the stake and that blood was on the floor, Mitchell’s wound healed, clotting into a discolored splotch of dry blood.

“Where did you get that?” Annie asked.

“Nina,” George said.

“Remind me never to fuck with Nina.”

“I think George’s brain would melt,” Mitchell quipped. There was a moment of silence, and all three of them laughed together, relieved that the panic was over and they were still all fine, all in one piece.

Well, this panic.
