Author's notes: this came to me after watching both HIMYM and a special on the Ellis Island hospital (“The Forgotten Ellis Island”)…and, mid-story, it morphed into a LIFE au where Tidwell was offering to fall on his sword so Dani wouldn’t get deported.

She’s not wild about going back to Canada, and I don’t want her to go to Canada, I want her to stay here, with me. Such was the coherent thought in the mind of Barney who was in his apartment even after Robin left, walking out on him and his proposal of video assistance. Since the video resume idea was clearly needing work, other possibilities had to be considered.
Foremost in his mind was - “Marry me, Scherbatsky,” Barney said under his breath. “No, that would never work.” It would never work for the following three reasons, which Barney could see overlaid over his apartment:

1) everybody knows Barney Stinson loves chasing skirts. Robin, being a good friend, wouldn’t want to cramp Barney Stinson’s extracurricular activities.

2) Robin is Barney Stinson’s friend. She doesn’t want a loveless marriage, even if pure friendship isn’t the whole reason why Barney Stinson is offering a ring.

3) it would make the slow and gradual courtship of Robin rather more difficult for Barney Stinson, but there wouldn’t be rest breaks with cheerleaders like there is now.

“Told you,” Barney said to himself. “But if that doesn’t work…” and put in a few calls to news stations.
