----------------------------------
"You wanted to see me?" Nick Cutter asks.
"Not particularly, but it's rather neccessary for what I'm about to show you. Shut the door." Once Cutter had done that, Lester pulled a folder out from his desk, laid it on his desktop, and opened it, spreading the contents - photographs - across the desk. "I trust the individuals shown here are familiar to you," he said to Cutter.
"That's me," Nick said.
"Quite right. Yourself and one Suzie Costello." You and she were quite the item for the first few years after your wife vanished. Then she dove deep into her work at Torchwood.
"She - Suzie was a friend," Nick said. "A shoulder to cry on."
"I'm sure you cried on more than just her shoulder, Professor. Needless to say, her recent death has altered what I was about to say to you."
"It does?"
Lester nodded. "Behave yourself, and treat Miss Brown with all due decorum - and none of this will come to light. Neither your wife nor Miss Brown will learn of these...indiscresions of yours."
"You've got a deal."
"You misunderstand." Not surprising, really.
"I- what?"
"You misunderstand, Professor Cutter. What I just said, was not a deal or a bargain. It was a warning; simple causality.
"You can go now."
