Guy, I think, is the medieval version of a social climber. That's definitely how the show portrays him. He has to compromise his morals to rise above his class. He would fit the mould of the penniless aristocrat - someone whose parents or grandparents had fallen below the level of power the family was used to. He's got that kind of chip on his shoulder which strikes me as quite unusual for that time, that place, when the social hierarchy was very strict and everyone knew where they stood.

I think I see what you mean...Guy's being ruthless as its the only way to return to the social heights the Gisbourne family once occupied.

(though now I've got this image of little Guy sitting on the floor, listening to Grandpa Gisbourne talking about the good ol' days) :)
