Guy, I think, is the medieval version of a social climber. That's definitely how the show portrays him. He has to compromise his morals to rise above his class. He would fit the mould of the penniless aristocrat - someone whose parents or grandparents had fallen below the level of power the family was used to. He's got that kind of chip on his shoulder which strikes me as quite unusual for that time, that place, when the social hierarchy was very strict and everyone knew where they stood.
