QUESTION:

I'm looking for a s/w developer for a new business. Where can I find one that I can afford?
Start up $$ is virtually non-existent , however the rewards for a successful application and business launch are very substantial.

REPLY:

Start-Up Capital is virtually non-existent for everyone, which is what separates the Haves from the Have-Nots.

I work as a Film Financier in the Film & Entertainment Industry. Everyone and their Grandmother has a Film Project and Script that is going to big hit. All of them are convinced that their project is going to make a lot of money.

While it's true that there are some really good ideas out there, most ideas are "half-baked." There are unforeseen circumstances or little details that people tend to miss if this is thier first business.

The interesting thing is that some people want to do a film with a budget of $2 - 3 million dollars when they have no name talent, little or no film production experience, and a script that actually needs to be proofread by a Script Writer that would cost about $20,000 if you want a $2 million budget Film Production to go well.

This relates to regular businesses as well. The hard part about Intellectual Property is that business investors know when someone has a good idea and they can either buy it off someone or they can take the information from the individual and do without them.

If you're going to get a designer, make sure you get a written contract that gives your rights to your ideas to that the designer can't walk off with it.

Also, make sure that you have some working knowledge of Web Page Design. You don't want to be at the mercy of your Designer who will know how the Web Site works and can lock you out of the own site.

Have you already secured a web site name and your own host server? If so, I'll assume that you know how to use it so that when you contract a Designer, you'll have access to the program and can monitor the progress.

I personally like Joomla Software because it deals with Content Management. It looks professional. For about $50.00 for setup fee and paying an average of $10.00/month you can have something set up along with Blogs, Polls, and Store.

That's about $170.00/year. If an individual can't even come up with $200.00 to invest in their own idea, that doesn't bode well for them. That's either because they don't fully understand the Business or, sadly enough, they're too cheap to invest in their own budget.

It may sound rude but you'd be amazed at how many wannabe Film Producers and Directors want to shoot a $2 million dollar film project when they have no experience in working with Film Budgets.

Investors are leery about ceding over money and resources to an unknown. Film Producers who wish to shoot a $2 million budget should first do a $200,000 - $750,000 budget with successful distribution.

Even though I'm talking about Film & Entertainment, this translates over to just any business. You just change the numbers and where the product or service is something other than shooting on film.

Do you know what your product or service will entail when it comes to web content? The success of the designer you choose for creating your web presence will depend on choosing the appropriate designer where their strengths play up to the type of product or service you have.

Are you dealing with Software? Literature? Goods and Services offered in a particular Geographical Region? Is it a product that will be shipped nationwide? If so, what are your shipping lanes?

Have you decided on your Fictitious Business Name, registered your business, and set up your DBA Account with your local bank?

What is your previous business experience? What makes you qualified to have keen insight that this particular product or service you're offering will sell? Where is your target market niche? Do you know who your target market niche is?

I'm just spit-balling. These are just general questions for you to think about if you haven't already.

If your idea is really that good, you can write up a proposal and submit it to "Angel Investors." There are organizations that will help people fund their business if they have a really good business model.
