PREDICTION: Publisher Found Dead, Brittney Skye, Athena

Jun 20, 2006 02:00

Whoops, I should be more careful about how I word things:
  1. Dead Publisher:
    1. I was asking Jezebel if she knew of any good Publishers. I then said that I was thinking of doing something in the form of Puzzles.
    2. I forgot that I've been playing Mystery Case Files where there are a lot of dismembered parts in the Game
  2. Chesapeake Bay:
    1. It was in Maryland
    2. I said I'm the Male Virgin Mary
    3. That's how you get a Dead Publisher floating in the Water as a response to me not being able to find one yet
  3. 72 years old: I said Davis is born 1972
  4. Merrilly:
    1. That's the name of the boat
    2. Scott's mom is Merrily while his dad Gary is a Gemini like me
  5. 11 1/2 miles northeast of the spot where his empty sailboat was found June 10:
    1. 11.5 = 11/5 = Brittney Skye's B-Day
    2. I said 6/19/2006 about Brittney Skye
    3. Brittney was the original Athena and in the Northeast
  6. Philip: Philip = Philippines. I said I'm Filipino
It's always unfortunate to see such mishaps. On a side note though, it's nice to see an acknowledgement of Brittney Skye as the original Athena from two years ago.

I think that if Brittney Skye had been given a chance, I think she would've taken the job seriously as Goddess of Knowledge and would've been more than just a pretty face.

Publisher's Body Found in Chesapeake Bay
Philip Merrill Went Missing While Boating Alone
By TOM STUCKEY, AP

Publisher and former diplomat Philip Merrill had been missing for more than a week.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (June 20) - The body of prominent publisher and former diplomat Philip Merrill was recovered from the Chesapeake Bay Monday, about 11 1/2 miles northeast of the spot where his empty sailboat was found June 10.

A boater discovered the body near Poplar Island off the Talbot County shoreline about 12:30 p.m. and notified police, Col. Mark Chaney, superintendent of the state Natural Resources Police Department, said.

The discovery ends a massive search effort over the last 10 days involving helicopter, boats and sonar equipment that covered more than 300 square miles of water from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge south to Plum Point off the Calvert County coast line.

Merrill's body was taken to nearby Tilghman Island, where he was identified based on his clothing by a deputy state medical examiner.

"The clothing matches what Mr. Merrill was wearing the day he took off to sail," including a shirt with the name of the boat, the Merrilly, on it, Chaney said.

He said the body would be taken to Baltimore Monday for an autopsy, which was expected to be done on Tuesday.

Chaney said he could not comment on what might have caused Merrill's death. "This is still under investigation," he said.

While the body was found a little south of the primary search area, Chaney said it would be reasonable that it would be in that area based on where the boat was found and time elapsed since Merrill disappeared while sailing alone.

The body was not wearing a life preserver, and Chaney was asked if it was floating when it was discovered. "It was floating enough for the boater to see him," he replied.

Merrill, 72, was the publisher of The (Annapolis) Capital newspaper, Washingtonian magazine and five other Maryland newspapers.

"The family has been going through a nightmare for more than a week and this discovery brings this episode to a close," Tom Marquardt, executive editor of the Capital Gazette newspapers and family spokesman, said Monday evening.

Many people had been out on the bay searching for Merrill, Marquardt said, adding the family is "very gratified by that and the well wishes" they've received.

"They're tight knit family," and Marquardt said he knows Merrill would be proud of how they've handled the situation.

Merrill held several high-ranking government posts, including a stint in Brussels from 1990 to 1992 as NATO's assistant secretary-general.

He also was a philanthropist, donating $10 million to the University of Maryland's college of journalism and $7.5 million for a new headquarters for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

University of Maryland President C.D. Mote Jr. said Merrill was a model for the profession of journalism: "The pursuit of truth, the exacting of information to make sound, well-considered decisions, and the ultimate goal of service to society."

He was remembered with fondness by several dignitaries, including Vice President Dick Cheney and U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski.

Cheney called him "a friend, an adviser and a patriot." He described Merrill and his wife, Eleanor, as "some of our closest friends during our years in Washington."

Cheney's wife, Lynne, worked for Merrill and his wife at the Washingtonian for a number of years.

"I had the privilege of working with him when he was the assistant secretary-general of NATO and I was secretary of defense," the vice president said. "Phil was one of those rare individuals who was good at everything he ever tried, and he made major contributions - public, business and philanthropic."

Mikulski, D-Md., recalled with laughter some of her encounters with Merrill, a conservative. "I was to the port side of Phil," Mikulski said, "but Phil always endorsed me."

He would invite her to his home for parties, she said, and they would get into spirited debates over everything. "We loved mixing it up," Mikulski said. "We have lost a great character."

A memorial service for Merrill, which was arranged before his body was found, will take place Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium in Washington.
