Fic: Crossing the Line

Cal pokes his head into Gillian's office and makes eye contact.

"Get packed, we're off to prison." Gillian arches her eyebrows as he disappears as quickly as he came. She packs up her bag and grabs her cell phone from her desk before leaving her office, the swell of her five month pregnant belly putting a slight change to her usual gait. Gillian shows up at Cal's office and goes in.

"Why are we going to prison?"

"Cuz it's fun." Cal smirks and grabs the file off of his desk before following Gillian out of the office.

"FBI called, they've got someone they need us to talk to, says he has information about September 11th…something that they said could stop the wars if it's true." Cal looks at Gillian as he gets in the car.

---

Cal sits back, watching the Arabic man on the screen as he sits next to Gillian.

"He's telling the truth about almost everything…except for when he starts to talk about Bin Laden, and then he starts to get off track. He lied about every question you asked about him." Cal pauses the video in front of them and looks over at Gillian as she looks over at him.

"Why would he give up information that would bring down Al Qaeda but then lie to protect Bin Laden?" Cal shrugs as he looks back at the video replaying the certain section at question. He pauses it quickly after it begins.

"Look. He feels guilty." Cal sits up and grabs the file.

"Where did the FBI say they nabbed him at?"

"Outside of Jalalabad heading for the Pakistan border."

"He's in the inner circle…he's probably one of five people that know where Bin Laden is in the world, and the only one that we've captured…he doesn't want him to know that he gave up the information because they'll kill him. Once you give up the head honcho you're living on a prayer." Gillian nods and pulls herself up.

"We should go talk to him again."

"I'll take Torres with me…you stay here and keep watching this, see what else you can find."

"Cal…"

"What?" Gillian pulls Cal closer and kisses him softly, rubbing his chest.

"Quit worrying about me." Cal kisses Gillian as he pulls away.

"I always worry about you love." Cal winks before leaving the lab. Gillian sighs as she rubs her belly. She wanders out of the lab and to the kitchen, getting a pudding cup before going back to the lab and putting her feet up as she watches the video again. After a while she texts Cal to bring her back a slushie when he came back to the office. Gillian eventually dozes off after watching the video a few times, having put it on silent the third time.

---

Gillian jumps awake and curses as she thunks her still sore ankle on the floor as Cal shakes her awake, a large white Styrofoam cup in his hands.

"Hey…"

"Didn't mean to scare you." Gillian shakes her head.

"It's my fault I fell asleep." Cal hands over the cup and leans against the desk as he watches Gillian.

"How about we go get some dinner and clear our heads a bit? Yeah?" Gillian nods and holds her hand out.

"Help me up." Cal pulls Gillian up and to his chest, kissing her softly.

"Em's staying at a friends tonight…how about we wrap this up quickly and then head home early?" Gillian nods and grins, following Cal out of the lab and to her office so she can grab her purse. Gillian tugs Cal towards her car and gets in the drivers seat before turning the engine over and heading towards one of their favorite restaurants. Gillian manages to get them a table in the busy restaurant before following the waiter and Cal to the setting by the window.

"Thank you." Cal pulls out Gillian's chair and pushes it in before sitting down himself, ordering a glass of scotch. He looks at Gillian and sighs softly as he studies her.

"How are you doing love?" Gillian shrugs as she fiddles with her water glass, looking at Cal as she rests her head on her hand.

"Tired…"

"You need to find something to do."

"Something to do? Work isn't enough?"

"Outside of work, you haven't been going to the gym like you used to." Gillian shrugs and looks at Cal.

"And do what? I can't run, I can't lift…" Cal could tell she was getting worked up as she sat up, looking much more interested in the conversation.

"I don't know, something…don't they have like special classes for that stuff?"

"That stuff? Exactly which stuff is that Cal because you obviously think there are a lot of problems here?" Cal's eyes widen as he sees the anger flit across Gillian's face, interrupting the look of disbelief.

"Hey…don't yell at me, I'm just worried about you. You've seemed very depressed lately and I don't want you to feel like that." Gillian's eyes immediately well up with tears as she covers her face with her hands and rests her elbows on the table. Cal reaches over and strokes her arm softly.

"What's wrong love?" Gillian pulls her hands away and uses her napkin to wipe the tears from her face as she sniffles.

"I don't know…it's like one second I'm up on top of the world, and the next I'm down in the dumps, then I'm doing okay and it's just up and down and up and down, and it's really fucking tiring…" Cal smiles and shakes his head.

"Don't shake your head and smile at me Cal Lightman."

"You're pregnant Gillian…you're expected to feel that way."

"I don't wanna feel like this though." Cal smiles softly and kisses Gillian's hand.

"I know, but think about what you get out of it. Yeah?" Gillian nods and sighs wiping her face again.

"Thanks." Cal looks up as the waiter comes back and orders for him and Gillian, looking at his partner with an arched brow.

"Sound good?"

"Yeah delicious." Cal nods and thanks the waiter before taking a sip of his scotch. Gillian sighs and takes a drink of her water before rubbing her belly.

"I think it's starting to move…"

"When are we going to stop calling it it?" Gillian shrugs and looks down at her belly.

"I don't know…Do you want to find out what it is?" Gillian looks at Cal and arches her eyebrow as he shrugs.

"I don't know…it'd be nice to know…Emily was a surprise…big one at that…" Cal itches his ear.

"Coulda sworn she was going to be a boy…" Gillian laughs and nods.

"I remember…you looked like someone had kicked a dog when they said you had a daughter." Cal nods thinking back to when his daughter had been born.

"So maybe we should find out?" Cal nods in agreement.

"I think that's a great idea." Gillian smiles.

"Okay, I have an appointment in a couple weeks; we can ask the doctor then."
