this morning, i woke up at 7am, caught the 8:30 bus, rode to campus, and walked about 2 blocks to the test taking center where i completed the official spanish placement test. here at uga, if you have completed any other spanish courses, high school or college, you must take the placement test in order to sign up for a class.
it has been 5 years since i was in a spanish class. and other than fragments of conversational spanish, i remember nothing. so, in essence, i paid 15 dollars and got up early to be told what i already know: i need to be in spanish 1. in fact, i christmas treed the fucker just to make sure.
now, here is how i feel about spanish.
whether we like it or not, our country is changing and spanish is quickly becoming necessary knowledge. bilingual people are almost guaranteed jobs, no matter what the field. when i was in high school, they told us we had to take 2 years of a foreign language (spanish, in most cases) and that we should "get it over with" as soon as possible. so i took the classes freshman and sophomore year. at gcsu, language classes were nearly impossible to get into.
and now, 5 years later, here i am doing it all over again. and even though i already know i needed to start with the intro class, i had to take a test to verify that i'm not fluent enough. why? because this country LOVES tests. (but that's for another soapbox moment.) oh, and uga has to pay for additions to the football stadium.. duhhhh.
anyway, some counties have gotten smart. gwinnett now starts introducing spanish in elementary school. which makes a lot more sense, seeing as the younger you are the easier it is to pick up a second (or third) language. it's been proven.
but as for me, here i am, 15 bucks poor-er, tired, and completely void of any knowledge of spanish. cheers.
