"Recently a bill was proposed in which changes the PA dog law to take OUT the state level protection we have against Breed Specific Legislation. The new bill being proposed will allow for local municipalities to decide their own dangerous dog laws, which include Breed Specific Legislation.
BSL is costly, ineffective and punishes licensed family pets because they are the ones that can be tracked down. BSL does nothing to protect the public from criminals, bad owners or dangerous dogs.
The breeds most commonly effected by BSL are:
American Pit Bull Terrier
Chow Chow,
American Staffordshire Terrier,
Great Dane, Bull Terier,
Mastiffs,
Staffordshire Bull Terrier,
German Shepherd,
Rottweiler,
Akita,
Doberman Pinscher,
and ANY breed of dog either mixed with or displaying traits of any of the above dogs.
...I am appalled by this proposed bill.
Hello Bully (a Pgh based non profit pit bull advocacy and education group) is hosting a BSL Awareness rally on June 20th at 7pm. This event will take place at Flagstaff Hill, Schenley Park - Pittsburgh PA. and will be followed by a candlelight vigil at 9pm.
I urge EVERY dog owner in PA to please attend if possible. Sure these may not be your breeds of dog, but once enstated BSL becomes a monster and more breeds will be added to the forever growing list. For example, in Italy there are now bans and breed restrictions on 92 different breeds of dogs, including Corgi and Border Collie.
If we don't take a stand now to educate the public as to what this really means, we are at risk to losing our very rights as dog owners."
