After seeing ...Kathy? Katie?...someone with a K name off to wherever she was from, Chuck slid out of bed and put on his smoking jacket of brooding robe and went to the window. He had missed New York and looking out at the city made him wish that he still lived here permanently.
"Chuck, honey, come over here," a woman's voice called from across the room. "There's someone here you need to meet."
Chuck rolled his eyes at Blair, Serena and Nate before making his way through the party towards his parents. Misty Bass reached out for her son's hand to pull him over towards the boy that his parents wanted him to meet. It was his parents' twenty year anniversary and he had been meeting people all night. Almost everyone that had ever been associated with his parents had showed up and all of them wanted to meet Chuck and see how the child of Bart and Misty Bass turned out. So far he hadn't failed to please. He was good looking , smart, polite and one of the most charming boys they had ever met. Chuck wasn't really into the mingling thing but it made his parents happy to show him off so he did it without complaint.
"Here he is," Bart Bass said, putting an arm around Chuck's shoulders and placing his son between him and his wife. "Son, I'd like you to meet the wonderful young author that wrote that article on me for the Times."
"I also go by Dan," the boy said, giving Chuck a smile. "Dan Humphrey."
"Chuck Bass," Chuck shook Dan's hand. After meeting a bunch of old people all night, it was refreshing to do the small talk thing with someone his own age. "I read your article. It was good."
Bart smiled. "It was more than good. Dan's quite talented. I think he could have a real future in writing, with the right education."
Dan blushed slightly and looked down at his shoes. "Well, I'd like to think you can get the right education in Brooklyn with hard work--"
"But we don't want to risk that," Misty finished for him. "Which is why your father offered to pay for Dan's tuition to St. Jude's."
Chuck nudged his father playfully with his shoulder. "Really, Dad?"
Bart nodded. "It took some convincing but eventually Daniel broke down and decided to accept my offer to help him out with school."
"I don't want to be considered a charity case or anything," Dan said to his shoes.
Misty gave her son's hand a squeeze. "We were hoping you could take Daniel under your wing and help him get adjusted to St. Jude's. You know how some of those boys can be to new people. Especially people with Daniel's financial situation..."
Dan looked like he wanted the floor to eat him. Chuck felt for the poor guy and managed to slide himself out of his parent's grip in order to stand by Dan's side and get him out of this awkward situation. "No problem, Mom. I'll protect him from the big bad trust fund kids. Come on, Dan, there's some people you can meet. See you later Mom, Dad."
Chuck waited until he and Dan were several steps away from his parents before speaking to Dan. "You're not really afraid of going to St. Jude's, are you?"
"No, no. I can handle school uniforms and manicured nails," Dan replied with a chuckle. "You can ditch me if you want."
"Why would I do that?" Chuck asked. Dan seemed like a cool enough guy and he had told his parents he'd watch over him. He led Dan towards Serena, Nate and Blair.
"Those your friends?" Dan asked when he saw where they were heading.
Chuck nodded. "The girl with the head band is my girlfriend, actually..."
Chuck snapped out of his daydream quickly and immediately turned to fill up a glass of scotch. He shot back the glass and re-filled it quickly. He repeated the action until his phone started to ring.
"Yeah?" Chuck snapped into the phone. "...Sorry, I forgot. Yeah, Nate, I'll be down in a minute. Bye."
