Chuck had gotten to NYC early Sunday evening, just in time to have a truly painful dinner with his father and Lily. Luckily Chuck had come prepared with an excuse to leave as soon as he could and wasn't questioned by anybody as he made his way downstairs. The great thing about living in a hotel was that there were plenty of bars to hide in and you didn't even have to go outside to find them. Chuck settled down in the biggest one and was halfway through his first scotch before dialing Nate's number.
"Nathaniel," Chuck said after Nate picked up. "I'm home and shook off the family. What are we doing tonight?"
The silence that followed after probably should have been a hint to Chuck that something bad was about to happen.
"Oh--oh shit, man, I totally forgot you were coming home tonight," Nate said. "I kind of made plans. I'm so sorry."
Chuck frowned. "What kind of plans?"
"I'm going to a soccer game in Brooklyn with a friend from St. Jude's," he said. "You might remember him, actually. He was around when you were. Dan Humphrey?"
"I have no idea who that is." Which meant that this Dan kid was poor. Which meant he was not worth knowing.
"He was kind of scarce when you were at St. Jude's. Anyway, we've been hanging out a lot since you left," Nate told him. "He's pretty cool. Hey, we could all hang out tomorrow night. I want you to meet him."
Chuck sighed. "Yeah, okay. I'm not going to Brooklyn though."
Nate laughed. "I figured. We'll keep it in Manhattan. But, hey, I gotta go. I'll talk to you later?"
"Yeah. I'm gonna call Serena and see what she's doing. See you, Nate." Chuck clicked the phone shut and ordered another glass of scotch. If he was going to hang out with new self-righteous Serena tonight, he was going to need a few more drinks.
It was a sign of how long it's been since he's been home when he was genuinely shocked that Gossip Girl sent out a blast about him only about fifteen minutes after his conversation with Nate.
Spotted: C drinking alone in the Palace Hotel. Looks like the UES bad boy didn't come home to the trumpets and confetti he was expecting. Seems while Chuck Bass is away, Nate Archibald will play. Sources tell me that N ditched C to hang in Brooklyn with Lonely Boy. Ouch. That has gotta hurt. I guess C is gonna have to have a sleepover with the memories of bromance past tonight. Welcome home, Chuck. We've missed you. XOXO Gossip Girl
Chuck rolled his eyes. "Thanks, sweetheart."
