What's wrong with society?

After a long flight from Canada to Houston, I click on the television while waiting for a friend to get home from a training session that he had to attend because he tried to restrain some kid who tried to stab himself with a pencil. Supposedly in the great state of Texas, you can get sued for trying to stop a kid from hurting himself. Welcome home to me.
Anyway, I turn on the TV and two shows that are on are Judge Judy and Oprah. Now, I don't usually watch TV and I sure as hell don't watch Oprah (although Judge Judy kicks ass), but both shows featured men that had beaten their girlfriends. The sad thing is both women took the said men back after being severely beaten to the point that the men were convicted of the assaults! What the fuck is up with that?
Both women were attractive and seemed to have their shit together. One of them was even a famous country singer. And both claimed to love the men that beat them.
Here's my question: how come I can't find a woman like that? Let me explain. I don't beat women. In fact, the worst I've ever done to the opposite sex is raise my voice in the heat of an argument and that has happened as often as Alan Greenspan gets laid. I just want to know why I'm sitting here, single and available, meanwhile women get beat by complete asshole psychotics, then look past the bruises and want them even more?
I admit - I'd never date a woman like I just described. Obviously they have very little self-esteem and don't realize what love is supposed to be. But if I did date a woman like this, one of two things would happen: 1) They'd dump me because they couldn't comprehend an affectionate, respectful, caring relationship. 2) They would probably smother me with adulation because I'd be the first man to treat them as an equal and not as a punching bag. If I had to bet, the first scenario would win out many more times than the second.
It kills me that a portion of my gender physically hurt other human beings and get away with it. But it kills me even more that they physically and mentally hurt women, ruining it for those men that actually want a meaningful, thoughtful, beating-free partnership.
