Mr. Wexler has told me that he thinks my recital is going to be good.
Yes. Read it again if you have to, to let it sink in.
First I played the Sculthorpe Threnody. He told me if he tried to play it half memorized and half with music, it would be a disaster... and clearly he didn't think this was the case with me when I finished. I still need to work on sound quality on the chords, but damn... I did it!
Then I played Flight of the Bumblebee at 120 for him. He said it was good and set the metronome up to 130 since I seemed so comfortable (and I was, is the great thing...) and I did it! Performance tempo is 144, I was shooting for 132. I might have to try for 144 just so I'm not bored!!!! I have to clean up spots, but that will take, meh, an hour. I have 17 days left.
My lesson ended early because between my last two lessons, I had gone over all the rep for my recital and it was good. He had nothing else to say or do. Wow.
I had asked him if my mother could come up for one little piece at the end, maybe a sort of encore... and he had been wanting to say no and apparently hoping I would forget about it. I brought it up again today to see if he had thought about it. He said, "so you want your mom to come up and play a piece with you, and you're going to say, 'this is my mom, she was my accompanist in high school and she's been supportive all these years', and everyone's going to cry?"
I said, "yes...?"
He kind of lowered his head with a smile of, perhaps, disbelief? And said it was okay.
When I told my mother, she SQUEALED into the phone. She had been telling me not to worry about it, that it's about me, and I shouldn't do it if it's not a good idea, but I knew she'd love to do it.
He asked what I was going to play, and I told him 'Danse Rustique by VanGoens.'William Squire!! HE DIDN'T KNOW IT. I played the beginning and he still didn't know it. I told him it was really cute and rather short, and not to worry. I learned the thing in middle school. Oddly enough, that fact in and of itself is impressive, since it reflects my early reaches for achievement and the jaws that dropped in the string faculty of the district as I made my way through school.
The excitement and anticipation is unbelieveable. My mother and my Jason are excited, and all they have to go on is my stories!
Should I buy helium balloons for my reception that match my (bright lime green) dress?
