Summary: Legends are told in bits and pieces, spread by word of mouth over the years. This is the story of Mary Campbell’s family: the husband to whom she told the truth of who she was. The son who grieved the loss of her so deeply that he spent half his life on the road alone, searching for her. And the son who found success, and love, and peace … until things went a little bit sideways.

I am always fascinated to find, in real life as well as in fic, that pivot point where alternative futures can emerge from. For instance, if I had not said hello to the new girl in sixth grade, I would never have met my husband, and so I would not be the mother of the daughter who introduced me to Supernatural…
I decided to rec stories that take one event in the Winchesters’ lives, turn it sideways, and explore what might have happened. It’s our Dean, Sam, and John … but even in a world where Mary stopped Azazel that night in the nursery, there’s no happy ending. Something I enjoy about this story is how the writer includes references to canon characters and events in this alternate future in such a way that the reader can exactly fill in the allusion. I am always impressed when a writer can take canon and simultaneously keep it and spin it into a new direction.
The events referenced in the story primarily take place in seasons one and two even though it is seven years after the pilot; there are no angels, and because Cold Oak never happened, demons are still a rarity. And even though Mary saved Sam in 1983, something evil is still coming after her family.

Just after Halloween, back in ’83, the demon Azazel had crept into the nursery of a baby boy, intending to drop blood into the child’s mouth and turn him into demon spawn. But Mary Campbell was waiting for him. She had a gun a stranger had brought to her family ten years before: a gun that could kill anything. She used it to kill Azazel that night. Saved her child. Then she disappeared.
