Summary: Mary works the late shift at the diner.
Reccer's notes: Warm Summer Nights reads like an old memory, soft and hazy, but treasured nonetheless. Written well before season four let showed us a slice of their backstory, it gives us John and Mary as they could have been, without the weight of the hunting life on either of them. Mary works the late shift and John becomes one of her regulars, and the story unfolds from there. It's tinged with heartache, the way all Winchesters' stories seem to be, but in a way that makes it quiet and wistful rather than painful. The twist at the end is a little bit easier to spot for having been written so long ago, but that doesn't detract from the fic at all. It remains one of my absolute favorites, a fic that I come back to whenever I want to read something that lets all the Winchesters be happy, if only for a moment.
[Short excerpt]That night, she drops two plates of toast, spills four glasses, burns a pot of coffee, and Carson starts screaming profanities at her in French. She can’t bring herself to care much, though. It’s three in the morning, and John is still there. He’s laughing silently, shoulders shaking, and when Mary passes by him, she hits him upside the head with a dishrag.
But she’s laughing, too. She’s giddy with it.
