Working in retail, one does certainly meet some interesting people. So i'm helping out this older couple, really cool folks, actually. Y'know, the grandma and grandpa who were probably punk rockers back in the day, tattoos and piercings and everything. Anywho, after getting a flatbed cart for them, the woman makes the comment:
"You sound exactly like my grandson. The way he talks, you sound exactly like him!"
"Really now? Even the uncharacteristically deep voice?" i reply.
"Oh no, he's six, but the kind of vocabulary he uses is exactly like yours. Really smart kid."
We talked a little bit about regional accents and the very slight differences between SoCal speak and PacNW vernacular, but it always makes me think how small this world is. At least the kid knows how to use English effectively... it's a small spark of hope for the next generation not turning out to be complete dumbasses.
