If you were to create the ultimate queer 4-piece band, which musicians would you choose? Why?
VOCALS: David McAlmont, because he's got the most AMAZING range and sings with so much Soul. I'd love to hear him harmonize with Amanda Palmer because it'd be INSANE. And he flames so openly, like a rainbow candle!
PIANO: Amanda Palmer, because she's bisexual, but it doesn't necessarily show up all the time in every song, so it's not like, FORWARD. She just IS and she's also Kewl.
BASS: Stefan Olsdal, because he's SO. FLAMING. GAY. And he can dance! And I love that he seems to fully understand how to Flame.
DRUMS: Simon Gilbert, because, well, he's done electro-trash and whatever you'd call Suede and I think it'd be fun to put him in this soul-punk-cabaret outfit and see what happened. I HOPE THERE'S JUDICIOUS USE OF TAMBOURINE INVOLVED.
I think they should be called... Crushed Fruit.
What band or musician do you most wish was queer?
JESUS CHRIST, BRETT ANDERSON, STOP BEING A FAUXMO. No, seriously, I wish Radiohead would venture into gay territory sometime! Just because they're all married to ladies doesn't mean they can't explore sexuality more in their lyrics, and Thom's a really good lyricist, so it'd be an incredible song. Failing that, I'd love a big homo sea shantey from Modest Mouse. C'MON, ISAAC. YOU'VE GOT JOHNNY MARR IN THE BAND AND HE LOVES TO DO GAY SHIT. Which reminds me I still need the new Pet Shop Boys album. DAMN.
Which queer artist have you been listening to for the longest? How'd you discover them?
Really? Really? Darren Hayes. I was a Savage Garden fangirl the moment I heard "Truly Madly Deeply" on the radio at age 11 in 1998 and I have followed them ever since, although I didn't get Hardcore until 2000. I used to FREAK OUT in 9th grade when people would see my SG shirt and be like DUDE LOL THAT BAND IS GAY because I didn't realize it was 1) An okay thing to be, and 2) THAT THEY ACTUALLY WERE GAY. Or, well, that Darren was. I figured it out later on, though, LONG before he came out to the public--that was just a moment of personal vindication. I love Darren and he still has the voice of an angel and the heart of a doofus. <3
