Character name: Dean Winchester
Series: Supernatural
Timeline: Mid 3.16 “No Rest For The Wicked”
Background:
Dean Winchester was born on January 24th, 1979, the son of Mary and John Winchester. He led a fairly normal, sheltered life until November 2nd, 1983, when Mary Winchester was attacked by a demon who killed her. Dean's father gave him his younger brother, Sam, and told him to go outside to protect him.
Dean lost his mother in the fire, and for the next couple of years took care of Sam as John moved them around, searching for information on the creature that had killed his wife. When Dean was 7, his father finally started teaching him how to use guns, and defend himself, both in general and from the monsters he was hunting. Dean had the basics of combat and weaponry taught to him, along with a mantra: protect Sammy.
Which is exactly what Dean did to the best of his ability. Dean often played caretaker to Sammy since John was often gone on hunts. There were a few slip ups along the way, but they only served to make Dean more overprotective of his brother. When he was 12, he received his eponymous amulet from his brother as a Christmas present, after revealing to Sam that their father actually hunted monsters for a living.
Eventually, as John and Dean started training Sam, Dean began helping his father with hunts, learning how to actually fight the monsters he'd been hearing about. By age 16, he had become particularly good at it. Sam joined the family business after training, so to speak, and things seemed to be going okay - or as okay for a kid who'd learned how to fight monsters, fool police agencies, and other numerous illegal things, could go. Dean ended up playing the peacemaker frequently when Sam and John argued about Sam leaving to go to college. When Dean was 20, he met Lisa Braeden for the 'bendiest night of his life' (and it's somewhat implied that he fathered her son, Ben Braeden.)
Some time after that, Sam left for college, and became estranged from Dean and John. This hit Dean particularly hard, who threw himself into the hunting life to be distracted. He met Cassie Robinson, whom he fell for hard and fast, but upon revealing the 'family business', she dumped him. This hurt Dean further, and he resolved not to get so close to someone that way again. He also inherited his father's Impala at some point.
His father went missing around the time that Dean was working his own case in New Orleans; Dean was 26 at the time. He went to Sam to ask for his help, and when Sam relented, Dean found he liked having Sam around again. He wasn't able to find his father, but when Sam returned home, his girlfriend Jess ended up killed in the same manner as their mother, and so Sam joined up with Dean again in the hopes of finding and killing the demon, and killing other things along the way.
They were mostly unsuccessful until their father, who was still alive, revealed the possibility of a weapon that could kill the demon (and their father was tracking said demon) when they were killing a nest of vampires. They found the Colt in the nest, and took it. However, their plan to try to kill the demon went horribly awry, ending with John possessed by the demon that killed his wife and the boys captured. Dean was being tortured to death when John took control back, and Sam managed to drive the demon away, but he was further hurt when, attempting to get to a hospital, they were hit by a possessed truck driver.
Dean was in a coma for a while, stuck between moving on and becoming a vengeful spirit, when his father made a deal with the demon - his life for Dean's. Dean was revived at the cost of his father's life, and this left him with horrible guilt. Adding to that were his father's last instructions, which were to protect Sam, but if he cannot do that, he must kill him. Dean is officially a fugitive as well, due to the killings a shapeshifter commited while pretending to be Dean.
During the year past their father's death, Dean attempted to be supportive of Sam and the strange psychic powers that he had developed. They continued hunting the demon and helping people, which culminated when Sam was kidnapped by the demon along with several other young men and women, and they were pitted in a fight to the death to become the demon's successor. To Dean's horror, Sam was killed by another 'special child', Jake. Unable to cope with the idea of losing both his father and brother, Dean made a deal with a crossroads demon - his life, in one years' time, for Sams. Dean tried to keep this information from Sam at first but was eventually forced to reveal it. However, Dean and Sam kill the demon that killed their mother and father with the help of their father's spirit and the Colt.
Dean at first did not fight this eventual march to the death, instead choosing to act recklessly during hunts (as he would 'die anyway'), though Sam did more than enough researching for loopholes for the both of them. He ran into Lisa again, and saved her son, Ben, which resulted in Dean telling Lisa about his job and not getting rejected, though he was unable to stay with Lisa. Sam met a 'hunter' who they later find out was a demon, Ruby, who wants to 'help' them, though Dean did not trust her. It was only after Dean is told that demons are former human souls and that he may very well become one in Hell that he really began fighting his fate. He and Sam are almost killed several times by Lilith and her demons because Lilith viewed Sam as a rival and (unbeknownst to them) the fact that Dean is a 'righteous man' who, if broken, could break the first seal in letting Lucifer back out.
Ruby eventually tells Dean that there is simply no way for him to get out of the deal, though the boys still try to find a way, asking Bobby for help. Dean begins suffering nightmares about his eventual fate, but they find out Lilith is in Indiana after Bobby pinpoints her location there. On May 2nd, Dean and Sam trick Ruby a devil's trap and take her knife, and then all three go pursuing Lilith (who was holding a family and the entire town she was in hostage) and, even after Ruby arrives mysteriously, they fail to capture her in order to make her let Dean go. Dean's deal comes due and he appears resigned to his fate, and Sam asks him what to do; Dean tells him to take care of the car and to keep fighting, and to remember what John and Dean had taught him.
And then he's whisked away to Vertiline at that very tense moment!
Personality: Dean, on the surface, seems relatively shallow. He's content to follow his father's footsteps, loves women, food and beer, and is overprotective of his brother, and is a bit of a gearhead. The more you know Dean, however, the more you realize that this is not all there is to him.
He desperately wants his father's approval, and doesn't believe he has it despite evidence to the contrary. He will describe Sam as the 'brains' of the outfit, when he himself is no idiot - perhaps ignorant of several things normal people would know, and a bit resistant to technology, but not stupid. He envies Sam's ability to disregard their father and do what he wants with his life; Dean is so wrapped up in wanting his father's approval that for many years he has ignored what he wants in order to do what his father needs him to do. He also believes that his father cares more for Sam than him, but appears 'okay' with this state of affairs.
Dean is loud, more than a little sexist, and brash in order to keep people at a healthy distance from him; after being hurt by Cassie and Sam (who he views as having left him, though Dean would never admit it) he doesn't want to be hurt again. He does genuinely enjoy a good time with women, beer, and food, not necessarily in that order.
Dean, like John, carries himself like a soldier; though he will defer to those that he trusts in a command situation, he will try and take command of all other situations, believing himself one of the few capable people around. This is because of the aforementioned distance issues; the only person he feels he can trust is himself, Sam and John, though Bobby, Ellen and Jo are later included in this category.
Dean tries and frequently succeeds at adapting to any given situation, though he often gripes and complains when things don't go according to plan. He's fairly capable at thinking on the fly.
Dean does have a soft, protective side, that is shown for Sammy and other people he cares about, and occasionally for women; he seems to have a thing for the 'damsel in distress' idea, and can be chivalrous (or just downright sexist) when he wants to be He's also fond of daytime television, old rock music, and porn, and has a fairly good sense of humor.
.
Appearance: Dean is 29 and stands at about 6'3 (
no, really! ) and weighs about 200 pounds. He's in pretty good physical condition, considering his hunting lifestyle, and has tanned, lightly scarred skin with freckles, green eyes, and short cropped brown hair. Dean is nearly always wearing some combination of old jeans and work boots, along with a t shirt and flannel over shirt, and his leather jacket (or, later, a blue jean jacket.) He also wears an amulet given to him by Sam.
Skills/Abilities: Dean is trained as a hunter, giving him a proficiency with many types of weapons (guns, daggers, spears; he favors a pistol or shotgun) and with his hands as well. He knows a fair amount about the ways to kill various monsters or to banish ghosts or demons, though this knowledge is finite and subject to recall, so often Dean researches (or makes Sam do it) before going on a hunt. He is shown to be capable in fighting with humans as well, though he can be outsmarted.
He's also a very good mechanic (restoring an Impala from the ground up and performing mechanic work frequently as a cover), as well as being skilled at manipulating people to get what he wants, or impersonating the law. He's also good at lock picking and, as an extension of the mechanical inclination, very good at using junk to create things such as radios. He also knows several ways to create home made bombs or incendiaries.
Spoken/Written languages: English, spoken and written, a limited amount of Latin, mostly related to exorcisms; exorcisms and rites in several languages.
Items: His wallet, with a fake FBI badge, several fake licenses and credit cards, and some pictures of his mother, father and Sam, along with his cell phone. He's also carrying a flask of holy water.
Third person sample: Dean Winchester hated waiting.
This wasn't to say that Dean was the type to run in balls-to-the-wall on a hunt; he'd learned firsthand that you wanted all the information on the creepy crawlie before you busted in to kill it. No, it was a specific type of inaction that got to Dean - the waiting between hunts, waiting for something to turn up. Waiting for a call from Dad to tell him where to go next.
Waiting for the devil to come calling on a due, even if, given the chance again, Dean would have sold his soul to save Sammy a million times over.
Thankfully this inaction was soothed currently by the rumble of the Impala's engine as he drove her towards Bobby's house, hoping he could help them one last time. Sam was asleep in the passenger seat, his laptop in the back.
Dean tapped his fingers on the steering well and glanced at Sam again, mouth pushed into a thin line. Normally he would have been offended by Sam sleeping during Dean's last forty-eight hours, but his younger brother had been up nearly constantly researching ways to get out of the deal; and they were headed to Bobby's to do the same thing. Sam deserved a little bit of shut eye before the final showdown.
Or before he watched his brother die.
No, they weren't going to dwell on that line of thought any more than they had to just yet. Dean reached forward to switch on the Impala's tape deck, turning the volume down a little and giving a small grin as Bon Jovi began to emanate from the speakers. There he goes, that was a little better.
He took a turn smoothly and glanced at the dark, empty stretch of road before going back to Sam again. Slowing down a bit, he reached into the dash for the empty styrofoam cup he had that had held the crappy motel coffee from the earlier dive they'd stayed in. Checking to make sure it was (mostly) empty, he reached over with one hand and balanced it on top of Sam's head.
Once that was done, Dean reached forward to crank the volume on the stereo with a wicked grin on his face. Might as well spend his last hours at least having some fun.
First person sample:
… Oh, what the crap! This isn't funny - fuck you, Lilith, and your creepy-ass eyes!
Magic. I fucking hate magic when I'm not the one using it. Who am I kidding - I hate it when I'm the one using it too!
…. Where the heck is this place, anyway? This don't look like any place in Indiana, unless she sent me to the medieval pizza palace or something like that.
I ain't got time to wander around this place, I need to get back to Sam before Lilith zaps his ass out of existence!
