Nominations that make me happy:

Johnny Depp for Pirates.

Bill Murray for Lost in Translation.

Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation, only the third chick director ever.

American Splendor for adapted screenplay.

Samantha Morton for In America and Jude Law for Cold Mountain; I've liked other performances of theirs better, but they're both brilliant actors in good movies.

Nominations that don't make me happy:

Marcia Gay Harden for Mystic River; she was the worst one in the cast, and annoying.

Seabiscuit for Best Picture, and I even liked it.

Pirates for so much technical stuff, pretty much just cause it made money.

Photographing elaborate sets is the new photographing Montana. Neither mean you should get a cinematography nomination.

Master and Commander, cause now I have to see it.

Unfairly overlooked:

Big Fish, only nominated for score when at least screenplay or art direction was due (I'd go picture/director, but I don't expect Oscars to agree with me about anything major).

Cold Mountain, which seems ridiculous to say because (a.) it's a Miramax movie (b.) it wasn't on my top ten for the year and (c.) it got seven nominations. But the only major one was for Jude Law. Now, I'm not saying the screenplay, directing or Nicole Kidman would be among my finalists for any of those, although the adapted screenplay probably would. But of all the times to call the Miramax Oscar bluff, now, when they actually make a solid movie? Another Miramax movie that didn't get a best picture nomination despite being really good: The Talented Mr. Ripley, also by this director. Who made The English Patient, their major Oscar glory years ago. Weird!
