And the raincoat that you wore when it rained today, I think it only made it rain more.

Theoretically, a summer evening in Prospect Park is the absolute perfect way to see Best Coast. But theoretically, a summer evening in Prospect Park is not rainy with a high in the mid-sixties. Strangely, this was the exact same weather we got this past weekend for the FeeBQh. So while it looked like maybe it would hold out for tonight's Decemberists/Best Coast show, a few songs into the Best Coast set, it started to rain, and then it kept raining, although at least the rain had the courtesy to be at its worst between the sets. But Marisa and I and Marie and her friend Anne and Tim all stuck it out anyway, as Marie's blanket got soaked and we huddled underneath Tim's lawyer umbrella (I call it that because it's kind of a jerk, but it's effective, dammit!) (also Tim is a lawyer) between sets.

Best Coast sounded fine even without sunshine; they're the kind of low-key, purposefully simple act that I sometimes fear will sound underwhelming or sloppy in a live setting, but Bethany's voice still sounds swell, and even has a little more bite, as do some of the songs. Ah yes, the songs. Do you even really need a Best Coast setlist? I have no idea. All of their songs pretty much sound the same. I'm not knocking it. I like those songs. I'm pretty sure these are most of the songs they played in absolutely the wrong order:

Summer Mood
Goodbye
Our Deal
Bratty B
When the Sun Don't Shine
When I'm With You
Gone Again
Crazy for You
I Want To
Boyfriend
Happy

I like "Bratty B" a lot so I'm glad I heard that one. A couple of these sounded a little sharper and fiercer in concert than they do on the record. I couldn't really tell you which ones. But now I've seen Best Coast! I would gladly see them open for any number of bands.

Then came the rain. As on Saturday, the weather people predicted cloudiness with a few stray thunderstorms or showers in some areas, and instead we just got drizzly but constant rain. It mostly let up a few songs into the Decemberists set, though, and they were good fun as always. They played even more of The King is Dead this time around, only skipping two of the album's ten tracks. They also played more of The Hazards of Love, which is to say two songs instead of one! There was nerdy jamming, there was some actual rocking out, there was singing along, and by the time they left the stage a little after 10PM it had become a nice summer night again, albeit a damp one.

Marisa says:

July, July!
Down by the Water
Calamity Song
Rise to Me
The Bagman's Gambit
We Both Go Down Together
Won't Want for Love (Margaret in the Taiga)
The Crane Wife 3
Don't Carry It All
All Arise!
Rox in the Box
The Rake Song
Dracula's Daughter/O Valencia!
The Perfect Crime
This Is Why We Fight
---
The Raincoat Song
When You Love Somebody (Fruit Bats cover)
The Chimbley Sweep
---
June Hymn

But that's not all! Pictures! Pictures of my friends in the rain, mostly. More at the click.
